Maharashtra: CM Fadnavis Inaugurates First Mumbai Climate Week, Focuses on Actionable Solutions

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated the first edition of Mumbai Climate Week at the Jio World Convention Centre in Bandra, marking the formal start of a three-day global climate-focused gathering aimed at translating dialogue into tangible action.
 
The three-day conclave is organised by Project Mumbai in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra and supported by the BMC. It will conclude on 19th February 2026 and will focus on sustainable, actionable climate solutions for the Global South, featuring global, national, and local experts.
 
Speaking during the launch, Prahlad Joshi, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, announced 1 lakh additional solar pumps for Maharashtra under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM Kusum) scheme. He further stated that, being the fourth-largest economy in the world, India’s emissions have come down in the last 10 years. India is decoupling growth and emissions.
This is the first of its kind globally, and Maharashtra is leading on that front. Maharashtra is becoming a model of how economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand, a model many states are now following. Therefore, Mumbai should become the voice of Global action,” said Joshi.
 
Addressing the gathering, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that today’s climate change is a governor’s challenge, where focus is needed on high heatwaves as well as unseasonal rains. He further said that, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has demonstrated that, the economic growth and climate responsibility can advance together. Recently, it was reported that India added 55gigawatts to its 252 gigawatt capacity in one year. He said that it is a proud movement that led 75% is contributed, and most of this has come from Maharashtra. He further said that Maharashtra has roughly 48 GBTE installed capacity with 21% renewable, but this number will change significantly by 2030 when we approach 84-gigawatt capacity from green and clean sources.
 
He said India’s message to the world is clear, climate ambition must be heigh but climate transition must also be inclusive. The Chief Minister further stated that Maharashtra bears the special responsibility of being a business powerhouse and financial hub, and indicated that if Maharashtra’s transition is successful, India’s transition will be faster. If India’s transition is on a larger scale, the global gains momentum. He elaborated on the services given to the citizens of India.    
 
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Union Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi, Maharashtra Minister of Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development Pankaja Munde, newly elected Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee, and several other senior officials and dignitaries. The three-day program is centred around the Jio World Convention Centre, while also extending across the city through a network of campus-based, community-driven and cultural events.
