Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the formation of a committee to propose long-term strategies to resolve the issues faced by onion growers. Speaking at a meeting held in the Legislative Assembly in Mumbai today, he stated that the committee will comprise the Additional Chief Secretaries of the Agriculture and Finance Departments, along with the Secretary of the Marketing Department.
Mr Fadnavis said that a meeting will be held with Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss issues related to the Centre, including curbing malpractices in the onion trade and increasing exports to stabilise prices.
Mr Fadnavis noted that onion production has increased significantly and emphasised the need to create adequate market opportunities for the surplus produce. He further directed the committee to examine the feasibility of crop diversification in major onion-producing districts such as Nashik, Pune, Ahilya Nagar, and Solapur.
