In Afghanistan, at least 812 people have been killed and 2,817 injured in the deadliest earthquake since 2015. According to the government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, the eastern province of Kunar is the worst affected, followed by Nangarhar, Laghman, Nuristan and Panjshir. Entire villages have been destroyed and communications disrupted, complicating rescue efforts. Most victims in Nurgal district still under the debris. The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) says its staff members are on the ground in earthquake-affected areas, working to get food to those in need.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the earthquake in Afghanistan. In a social media post, the Prime Minister said that India stands ready to provide all possible humanitarian aid and relief to those affected by the earthquake in Afghanistan. Mr Modi also said that his thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this difficult hour, and also wished speedy recovery to the injured.
