Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will attend the swearing-in ceremony of BNP chairman Tarique Rahman as Prime Minister of Bangladesh in Dhaka today. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri will also be present on the occasion. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led alliance has secured landslide victory in recent Parliamentary elections.
External Affairs Ministry said, Mr Birla’s participation at this important event underscores the deep and enduring friendship between the peoples of India and Bangladesh, reaffirming India’s steadfast commitment to the democratic values that bind our two nations. The ministry also welcomed Bangladesh’s transition to an elected government under Mr Rahman’s leadership.
Bangladesh interim government has invited heads of government from 13 countries, including India, China, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Malaysia and Sri Lanka to attend the oath ceremony. Newly elected Members of Parliament will also take oath at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this morning. BNP-led alliance won 212 seats, compared with 77 for Jamaat-e-Islami-led alliance.
