Lok Sabha to Resume Debate Today on Resolution Seeking Removal of Speaker Om Birla

The Lok Sabha will today resume discussion on resolution seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla. Yesterday, the motion was moved by Congress MP Dr Mohammad Jawed, in the House. Mr Jawed also alleged that Mr Birla failed to maintain the impartiality needed to command the confidence of all sections of the House.

Opposing the resolution, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said Speaker Om Birla conducted the functioning of the House in an impartial manner. The Minister said, the opposition parties have brought this resolution against the Speaker only to serve their political interests. Dr. Shrikant Eknath Shinde of Shiv Sena, Chirag Paswan of LJP (R) spoke against the resolution and criticized the opposition for disrupting the House.

Earlier, Gaurav Gogoi of Congress initiated the discussion. He said, the leader of the Opposition in the House Rahul Gandhi was repeatedly interrupted by the Speaker during his speech on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address.

Members from Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party and DMK spoke in favour of the resolution. The discussion remained inconclusive. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha will take up further discussion on the working of the Ministry of Rural Development.
