Replying to a debate on the Bill, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said, on the 28th of last month, a resolution was passed in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly requesting the Government of India to give statutory status to Amaravati as the sole capital of Andhra Pradesh.’ He expressed gratitude to the members of the House who supported the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, during the discussion.
Earlier, supporting the Bill, B. Manickam Tagore of Congress said a state cannot progress without certainty, and governance cannot function without a fixed centre. He said the bifurcation under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, had fundamentally altered the economic structure of the state.
TDP leader and Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said people of Andhra Pradesh are excited about the legislation and statutory status for Amaravati. He said farmers have sacrificed their lands to make it a capital. The TDP MP also highlighted the contribution of women towards the cause.
C. M. Ramesh of the BJP said Andhra Pradesh is getting it Capital, Amaravati, which will be the people’s capital and green capital. He said, ‘Capital does not mean mere buildings, but it is a symbol of respect and sovereignty and also the primary seat of governance.’
P. V. Midhun Reddy of YSRCP said that the Bill in the present state is of no use to the people. He said his party is not against Amaravati, but it is against the Bill. YSRCP Members also staged a walkout.
D. Purandeswari of the BJP said, in 2014, when the bifurcation took place, Telangana began its journey with Hyderabad, but Andhra Pradesh did not have a capital, an Assembly, a Secretariat or an administrative ecosystem. ‘She said that when three States were created during the tenure of Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister, the states were allotted a capital, but Andhra Pradesh was subjected to deep humiliation in 2014. D Purandeswari said people of Andhra Pradesh accepted the loss peacefully and constitutionally, keeping the nation’s interests in mind.
Union Minister G Kishan Reddy, Shrikant Shinde of Shiv Sena, Dharmendra Yadav of Samajwadi Party, Arvind Sawant of SS (UBT), R Raghuram Reddy, Mallu Ravi and Vamsi Krishna Gaddam of Congress, Independent MP Pappu Yadav, Harsimrat Kaur Badal of SAD and Appalanaidu Kalisetti of TDP also participated in the discussion.
