Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has written to the leaders of the political parties in the Lower House, urging them that the time has now come to engage in serious reflection and introspection to uphold the high dignity and prestige of democratic institutions. In the letter, Mr Birla has expressed deep concern over the displaying of banners, placards and posters and the use of certain language inside the House by some MPs. He said it is imperative that we all, both individually and collectively, engage in serious reflection about such a situation.
He said that the top leadership of all political parties, as well as the leaders of all parties within the House and at the Parliament House Complex, must make efforts to ensure discipline and high ethical conduct among their members.
He said the Parliament of India is the supreme democratic institution representing the aspirations of the people of the country. He said the House serves as a forum for discussion, dialogue, consensus and dissent and for the expression of diverse ideas and perspectives.
Mr Birla said that as a member, our responsibility becomes even bigger in upholding the dignity and prestige of all democratic institutions across the country.
