Both Houses of Parliament adjourn following uproar over various issues

 

        Both the Houses of Parliament have been adjourned for the day following opposition uproar over various issues. The Lok Sabha was first adjourned till 2 PM and then finally for the day when it reassembled post lunch.

        When the Lok Sabha re-assembled, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey tabled the reports of the Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology. Janardan Mishra of BJP also tabled the reports of the standing committee on rural development. Later, Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal moved the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024 for consideration and Passing but the opposition started sloganeering over their demand. Mr Meghwal said that it is an important Bill related to the interest of Schedule Tribes but the opposition member is disrupting the proceedings. He appealed to them to participate in the discussion but the opposition continued with their protest forcing the chair to adjourn the House for the day.

        Earlier, when the Lok Sabha met at 11 AM, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla took up Question Hour but the opposition members started sloganeering and trooped into the well of the House demanding discussion on Special Intensive Revision in Bihar and other issues. Mr Birla appealed to the opposition to allow Question Hour saying that their conduct is not in accordance with the dignity of the House. He expressed concern for creating disruption and displaying placards inside the House and urged the protesting members to go back to their seats and allow the House to function. Mr Birla said, after completion of the Question Hour, he will allow members to speak on the issues under rules they want to raise. But the opposition members did not pay heed to his appeal and continued with their protest. As the pandemonium continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2PM. However, Amid the noisy scene, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri replied to a question related to CNG coverage across the country.

        However, the Rajya Sabha transacted a few listed businesses, when it assembled at 11 AM. The Rajya Sabha bid farewell to the six retiring members representing Tamil Nadu, who have completed their tenure today. They are M Mohamed Abdulla, M Shanmugam and P Wilson of DMK, N Chandrasegharan of AIADMK, Vaiko of MDMK and Anbumani Ramadoss of PMK. However, Mr Wilson has been re-elected to the Rajya Sabha and his tenure will commence from tomorrow.

        In his speech, Harivansh said that each of these members has contributed meaningfully to the deliberations of the House bringing with them diverse experiences, perspective and deep sense of commitment to public service and democratic values. On behalf of the House, the Deputy Chairman expressed gratitude to the retiring members for their service to the nation. On the occasion, Union Minister and Leader of the House J P Nadda appreciated their valuable contribution inside and outside the House. He said, the House has greatly enriched with their experiences and contributions. Other members including Pramod Tiwari of Congress, Derek O’ Brien of TMC, Dr John Brittas of CPI (M), Tiruchi Siva of DMK, Sanjay Kumar Jha of JD(U) and Union Minister Ramdas Athawale also spoke on the occasion. Deputy Chairman Rajya Sabha Harivansh administered oath to newly nominated member Ujjawal Nikam. After completing this business, Harivansh took up Question Hour but the opposition members started sloganeering over their issues. The Deputy Chairman appealed to the protesting members to allow the House to function but in vain. Amidst din, he adjourned the House till 2 P M. When the House re-assembled at 2:00 PM, the scene was no different as the opposition members started sloganeering. Amidst the noisy scene, the Rajya Sabha took up the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025 for consideration and passing. The Bill seeks to provide for the responsibilities, liabilities, rights and immunities attached to carriers with respect to the carriage of goods by sea. M Thambidurai of AIADMK and Ayodhya Rami Reddy of YSRCP participated in the discussion. However due to continued sloganeering, the Chair adjourned the House for the day.
