Ladakh: Legendary Poet and Scholar Haji Khawaja Abdul Hamid Tanveer Passes Away

In Ladakh, people bid farewell to one of its most esteemed literary figures, Haji Khawaja Abdul Hamid Tanveer, who passed away at the age of 84 in Srinagar this morning. Our correspondent reports that a scholar, poet, historian, and educationist, Haji Tanveer has left behind an enduring legacy that has profoundly shaped Kargil’s literary and cultural identity.

A condolence meeting was held at the Ladakh Cultural Academy Hall in Kargil in which renowned scholars, poets, and cultural activists paid homage.

Haji Tanveer was celebrated for his mastery of multiple languages, including Urdu, English, Balti, and Kashmiri. His poetry collection, Afkar Tanweer, and his extensive research on the history of Purig contributed to Ladakh’s heritage. He also played a pivotal role in education, serving as the Zonal Education Officer (ZEO) in Kargil.
