Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics has nominated opposition MP Andris Kulbergs as the country’s next Prime Minister. Kulbergs, a member of parliament from the opposition United List party, has been asked to form a new government. At a press conference yesterday, the Latvian President said that he held intensive consultations in recent days with representatives of the political parties and factions in the Saeima, following the resignation announcement by outgoing Prime Minister Evika Silina from New Unity.
Taking into account the results of the consultations, the President said that he saw an opportunity to form a government by entrusting it to representatives of the opposition. Prime Minister-designate Andris Kulbergs is expected to show significant progress in government formation by the 25th of May, including the specific outline of the coalition, the division of responsibilities among the parties, and a draft of the government’s declaration.
