Ladakh: Kargil district witnesses fresh snowfall

In Ladakh, the Kargil district witnessed fresh snowfall in the higher reaches and rainfall in the lower areas since last night, affecting normal life in several parts of the region.

Continuous snowfall has been reported from Zanskar, Sankoo and Drass since last night, while rain lashed many lower areas of the district. The fresh spell of precipitation has led to the disruption of vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway (NH-1D), which connects the Union Territory of Ladakh with the rest of the country.

Officials said snowfall at several locations along the highway has hampered traffic movement, and authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Commuters have been advised to remain cautious while travelling in the region.

Meanwhile, schools across the district have reopened after the winter break. Despite the inclement weather, children were seen heading towards their schools in different parts of Kargil as academic activities resumed.

The recent rainfall in lower areas has also brought relief to local farmers ahead of the upcoming agricultural season, as it is expected to improve soil moisture for cultivation. The Meteorological Department has predicted that rain and snowfall may continue at several places today, while weather conditions are likely to remain partly cloudy in the coming days.
