National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported sexual abuse of a girl from the SC community and the arrest of 44 accused in the matter in Kerala. In a statement, the commission said, if media reports are true, it raises a serious issue of human rights violation concerning the victim. The NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police of Kerala, requesting a detailed report within two weeks. The Commission has asked for the report to include the status of the FIR, the victim’s health, medical care, counselling, and any compensation provided.
