Kerala Tourism Department Hosts Champions Boat League Across Traditional and New Venues

Country boat races are a major attraction in Kerala, with numerous events held across the state every year. Now, a new-age boat race is making waves in Kerala.

No introduction is needed for the snake boat races of Kerala. Known locally as Vallam Kali, these races are an integral part of Kerala’s culture and a major attraction for tourists. Now, a new-age version of the traditional event is making waves – the Champions Boat League, introduced by the State Tourism Department.

Modelled on the format of a cricket league, it aims to draw more visitors to God’s Own Country. This is the fifth edition of the league, with competitions that began in September and will continue until December 6.

Along with the traditional boat race venues, the league also brings the excitement of the sport to new locations with high tourist footfall. Marine Drive in Kochi, Beypore in Kozhikode, and Cheruvathur in Kasaragod are among the non-traditional venues included this year.

Marine Drive in Kochi, a popular tourist spot known for its sunset cruises, had not been a venue for traditional boat races in the past. Hosting events in such locations helps spread the spirit of the boat race to newer regions. At the same time, traditional venues like the lakes of Alappuzha continue to feature prominently in this modern format of the snake boat race.

Ten more races remain in this year’s league, with the grand finale scheduled to be held in Kollam on December 6. As the competitions progress, one thing becomes increasingly clear, this boat race is more than just a sporting event; it is a celebration of Kerala’s rich culture and heritage.
