Kathmandu Valley celebrates Maghe Sankranti with vibrant Magar and Tharu performances

Kathmandu Valley buzzed with festive vibes today as Magar and Tharu community people from different provinces of Nepal gathered in Tundikhel ground in the heart of Kathmandu Valley. Different groups from Tanahun, Ramechhap, Koshi, and Sudurpaschim performed cultural music and dance shows in traditional attire. Men were draped in bhangra, and Kachhad and women were dressed in Cholo, fariya,patuka and ghalek with traditional hill jewellery. Magar and Tharu’s music filled the air.
 
For the Tharu community in Nepal, Maghe Sankranti marks the New Year. Families traditionally enjoy the festival by indulging in delicacies such as ghee, chaku, tarul, laddus, sel roti, dhikri, and khichdi. President Ramchandra Paudel has conveyed his belief that festivals such as Maghe Sankranti enhance feelings of brotherhood, mutual harmony, and tolerance among all Nepalese.
 
He emphasised that such festivals, as unique intangible cultural heritage, play a significant role in showcasing our country to the world. Prime Minister of Nepal Sushila Karki has conveyed her best wishes, expressing hope that the Maghe Sankranti festival inspires everyone to come together and work towards peace, stability, and prosperity.
