EAM Jaishankar Highlights India’s Efforts to Protect Intangible Heritage at UNESCO ICH Meet

 
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar today said that besides being home to many UNESCO heritage sites, India has itself undertaken many projects to preserve and conserve heritages across the world. Addressing the inaugural ceremony of 20th Session of Inter-governmental Committee for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, he lauded country’s efforts to protect its intangible heritage. The Minister added that traditions, languages and festivals are the most democratic aspects of culture as they are owned by all, guarded by many and enriched by each generation. Mr Jaishankar also expressed happiness with Indian cities of Hyderabad and Lucknow for being recognized as UNESCO City of Gastronomy. The Minister also lauded UNESCO for protecting the intangible heritages. 
 
Speaking on the occasion, Union Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that the meeting reinforces the country’s commitment to protect the living traditions. He added that it is important to protect these traditions so that future generations can inherit the traditional wisdom of the world. 
 
The inaugural ceremony for the session commencing tomorrow, was held at Red Fort in New Delhi today. The event was attended by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany and other dignitaries.
