Islami Andolan Bangladesh exits Jamaat-led alliance, to contest polls independently

Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) exited the Jamaat-e-Islami-led electoral alliance and announced it will contest the 13th National Parliamentary Election independently in 268 constituencies, fracturing the Islamist bloc’s one-box strategy of single candidates.

Spokesperson Gazi Ataur Rahman said the decision was taken on the direction of IAB Ameer and Chormonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim and announced at the party’s Dhaka office. Rahman said Islami Andolan faced unfair treatment in the alliance and objected to actions contrary to Islamic ideals under Jamaat’s leadership.

He also criticised Jamaat for political understandings, including talks with BNP leader Tarique Rahman, without consulting partners. The move ends IAB’s role in the 11-party Islamist alliance and adds uncertainty to opposition coordination before the polls.
