IOL Highlights Strong India-South Africa Ties at G20

IOL News, a leading South African digital publication, has highlighted the deep mutual respect, trust, and long-standing ties between India and South Africa. In its coverage, the outlet noted that at this year’s G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands out not only as one of the most experienced statesmen in the room but also as one of the most consequential global leaders.

The report also emphasised the historical depth and strategic weight of India-South Africa relations. It recalls India’s pivotal role in securing the African Union’s admission as a permanent G20 member under its 2023 presidency, an inclusion the publication describes as transformative for Africa’s global standing. IOL also highlighted Mr. Modi’s impactful leadership during India’s G20 presidency, noting how he helped reshape global expectations.

The article traces the roots of bilateral ties back to Gandhi’s early activism in Durban and India’s unwavering support for the anti-apartheid struggle, describing today’s partnership as an extension of this shared legacy.

The report points to several pillars of the relationship such as a vibrant South African Indian diaspora, strong trade and investment links, warm personal rapport between PM Modi and President Cyril Ramaphosa, and growing political engagement.

It further commends India’s role in supporting South Africa’s entry into IBSA and later into BRICS. The publication recalls that during last year’s BRICS Summit, amid uncertainty PM Modi was the first major leader to confirm his participation, helping set the stage for a successful gathering.

On the economic front, IOL notes that India is South Africa’s fourth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding 18 billion US dollars. South Africa’s key exports to India include gold, coal, copper, and phosphoric acid, while India exports petroleum products, vehicles, pharmaceuticals, and machinery, creating jobs and driving investments in mining, technology, and infrastructure.
