International Labour Day is being celebrated across the globe today. The day is observed to honour the contributions of the working class and promote their rights. It pays tribute to the sacrifices of workers in securing economic and social rights around the world. The day is also known as Global Workers Day or May Day.
This day originated as a union movement in the US around the 19th century. A resolution was adopted by the Marxist International Socialist Congress demanding that workers not be made to work more than 8 hours, and since then, it has become an event and continues to be celebrated on 1st May as Labour Day. In India, the first Labour Day was observed in 1923, in Chennai under the leadership of the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan.
