Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhaka celebrates Buddha Purnima

Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre, High Commission of India in Dhaka celebrated Buddha Purnima on Thursday. Buddha Purnima is a sacred day that marks the birth, enlightenment, and Maha Parinirvana of Lord Buddha. The cultural evening included a musical storytelling of Lord Buddha’s life, Bharatnatyam and Odissi dance performances.

 

Speaking on the occasion, High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Pranay Verma said, “The celebration of Buddha Purnima is a sacred occasion for us to reflect on our shared values, ancient connections, and spiritual legacy which continue to shape our present and guide our future.”

 

The vice president of BBKPS, Maharaj Sarupananda Bhikshu, delivered a message from the President of the Sangha, Venerable Pujya Swami Buddhapriya Mahathero.

 

The highlight of the evening was a musical storytelling showcasing the life of Lord Buddha, choreographed by the celebrated dancer Proma Abonti. The group also presented multiple Odissi performances. Mrs. Shoma Barua, also known by the name Proma Abonti, stands as a pioneering figure in the realm of Odissi dance in Bangladesh.

 

This was followed by a solo Bharatanatyam performance by Avantika Menon- a devotional composition through a seamless blend of ‘nritta’ and ‘abhinaya’.

 

Prominent persons from the field of art and culture in Bangladesh were present at the event held at the Indian Cultural Centre (ICC) in Dhaka. Many members of the Bangladesh Buddhist Kristi Prachar Sangha (BBKPS) took part in the event.
