India’s Milk Production Rises Over 63% in Last Decade, Reaches 239 Million Tonnes

The milk production in the country has risen by over 63 per cent from 146 million tonnes to over 239 million tonnes in the last ten years. India continues to hold 1st position in global milk production and contributes nearly a quarter of the world’s supply. The Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said that currently, dairy is contributing five percent to the national economy and directly employing more than eight crore farmers. The availability of milk for each person in the country has also risen sharply over the past decade. The per capita supply has gone up by 48 per cent, with more than 471 grams per person a day in 2023-24. This is far above the world average of around 322 grams per person a day.
