The Indian Navy today received Malwan, the second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, built by Cochin Shipyard Limited at Kochi. The Ministry of Defence informed that the vessel has been indigenously designed and constructed as per Indian Navy specifications and complies with the classification rules of DNV. Named after the historic coastal town of Malwan, the ship reflects the rich maritime legacy associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and carries forward the tradition of the erstwhile INS Malwan, which served the Navy till 2003.

The 80-metre-long vessel, with a displacement of over one thousand 100 tonnes, is equipped for underwater surveillance and anti-submarine warfare operations in coastal waters. It is also capable of low-intensity maritime operations and mine warfare. The ship is fitted with waterjet propulsion and advanced systems including torpedoes, anti-submarine rockets, modern radars and sonar.
