The Indian Army has launched a Major Bridge Project in Sri Lanka under Operation Sagar Bandhu. The Ministry of Defence said the bridge links Colombo, the capital city, with the key economic centre of Puttalam along the vital coastal corridor passing through the Chilaw district. It added that the project represents India’s ongoing engineering assistance provided to support Sri Lanka’s infrastructure recovery and connectivity.
Highlighting India’s extended support in the region, the Ministry noted that by restoring essential connectivity, the Indian Army is helping ensure uninterrupted movement of people, goods and essential services while reinforcing local livelihoods. The effort underscores the country’s role as a dependable first responder in the region and reflects the spirit of partnership underpinning its Neighbourhood First approach.
The Ministry further said that the Indian Army continues to extend critical humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support to Sri Lanka in line with its Neighbourhood First Policy under Operation Sagar Bandhu. The initiative reflects the country’s enduring commitment to regional stability and humanitarian cooperation with its maritime neighbours.
Operation Sagar Bandhu demonstrates the Indian Army’s ability to rapidly deploy specialised engineering capabilities in support of friendly nations. The operation reflects the country’s strengthened regional resilience, vision of cooperative security and humanitarian partnership in the Indian Ocean region.
