Indian Ambassador Meets Intel CEO to Discuss Expansion of Semiconductor and AI Operations in India

Indian Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, met Intel CEO Lip Bu Tan to discuss the company’s plans for expanding semiconductor and AI operations in India, in alignment with the government’s India Semiconductor Mission and IndiaAI Mission.

The virtual interaction comes as New Delhi accelerates efforts to strengthen its semiconductor and AI industries under the India Semiconductor Mission and IndiaAI initiative.

In 2021, the Union Cabinet approved the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) with an outlay of ₹76,000 crore to boost chip fabrication, design, and manufacturing. According to a Press Information Bureau factsheet, in 2025, India inaugurated its first 3-nanometer chip design centers in Noida and Bengaluru, and five semiconductor production units are currently under construction.

In 2024, the IndiaAI Mission was approved with a total outlay of ₹10,371.92 crore to focus on “Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India.” The Mission has expanded computing capacity from 10,000 to 38,000 GPUs to provide affordable AI access. Its seven pillars include compute infrastructure, AIKosh, application development, skilling, startup funding, and safe and responsible AI development.
