India reaffirmed its commitment to a free, open, and rules-based maritime order, grounded in international law and the principles of UNCLOS, during a high-level UN Security Council debate on maritime security in New York. Representing India, MEA Secretary (West) Tanmaya Lal highlighted India’s MAHASAGAR vision, emphasizing the strategic importance of sea routes for trade, energy, and communication.
He noted India’s strong maritime stakes, with a large coastal population and significant ocean economy dependence. Mr. Lal also spotlighted challenges in maritime governance and India’s proactive measures, including a unique Indian Naval Ship mission involving nine Indian Ocean Region countries and the Deep Ocean Mission to enhance deep-sea knowledge and sustainability. Calling for global cooperation, he affirmed India’s readiness to contribute to international maritime security and prosperity efforts.
