India’s Ambassador to Brazil, Dinesh Bhatia, has reaffirmed India’s climate commitment, saying that the country is ready to work with all nations to achieve an ambitious, inclusive, fair, and equitable transition to sustainability. Speaking at the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 30) at Belem in Brazil, Mr Bhatia highlighted that India has consistently striven to drive its development along a low-carbon pathway over the past decade. He underlined that India has steadily met its climate targets ahead of schedule under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He noted that between 2005 and 2020, the country reduced the emission intensity of GDP by 36 per cent, and this trend continues. He added that the non-fossil power installed capacity now accounts for over 50 per cent of the country’s total installed capacity, enabling us to reach our revised NDC target five years ahead of schedule. Mr Bhatia emphasised that India has not only conserved but also expanded its forest and tree cover, which now stands at 25.17 per cent of the total geographical area.
He said that with around 200 gigawatts of renewable energy, India is now the world’s third-largest producer of renewable energy, while ambitious programs in solar, wind, green hydrogen, and biofuels are transforming its energy landscape. He further said that for developing nations like India, access to affordable finance, technology and capacity building is vital to implement ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions under the Paris Agreement. He said that equitable, predictable and concessional climate finance remains the cornerstone for achieving global climate goals.
