India commences installation of additional Bailey bridges in Sri Lanka following Cyclone Ditwah

Continuing its steadfast commitment towards supporting Sri Lanka in times of need, India has commenced the installation of additional Bailey Bridges as part of its humanitarian assistance following Cyclone Ditwah. The Indian Army’s engineer corps have begun preparatory works for launching a 240-foot Bailey Bridge at Thoduwawa, Chilaw, in Sri Lanka’s North Western Province. The bridge will help restore a vital coastal route connecting Colombo and Puttalam, which suffered major disruption due to the cyclone.

This initiative reinforces India’s Neighbourhood First policy and underscores New Delhi’s commitment to stand by Sri Lanka in its recovery efforts. By providing swift engineering and logistical support, India continues to play a key role in strengthening regional connectivity and resilience in the Indian Ocean region.

So far, the Indian Army engineering corps have installed bridges helping reconnect regions cut off in northern and Central provinces.
