Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Sibi George, emphasized the need to strengthen capacity-building and provide technical assistance to address emerging threats, particularly by ensuring reliable support in the event of a biological incident. He said this while delivering the closing address at the international conference marking 50 years of the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC): Strengthening Biosecurity for the Global South in New Delhi today. He also highlighted the importance of the responsible use of emerging technologies and the necessity of effective oversight. The Secretary also stressed the need to further strengthen the BWC to ensure it remains fit for purpose in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Reaffirming India’s commitment to global biosecurity, Mr George reiterated the country’s readiness to deepen cooperation and to continue playing its role as a trusted partner of the Global South.
