A total of six crore individuals has been screened for Sickle Cell Disease under the National Sickle Cell Mission.
Among those screened, two lakh 15 thousand individuals diagnosed with the disease and over 16 lakh carriers have been identified.
According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, states including Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Karnataka, and Uttarakhand have demonstrated significant progress by achieving a high percentage of screening relative to their targets.
The highest incidence of diagnosed cases has been reported in the states of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
The National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission was inaugurated in 2023 by the Prime Minister.
The mission aims to eliminate sickle cell anemia from the country by 2047 with the universal screening of seven crore individuals aged 0 to 40 years in affected tribal areas.
