Hockey Pro League: India go down 1-2 against Argentina

In the FIH Hockey Pro League, India suffered a narrow 1-2 loss to Argentina at the Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, Netherlands, last evening.

Jugraj Singh gave India an early lead in the 4th minute with a drag flick from a penalty corner. Argentina equalised soon after through Tomas Domene in the 9th minute, also from a penalty corner.

Both teams had chances in the first half, but strong goalkeeping from Krishan Bahadur Pathak and Argentina’s Tomas Santiago kept the score level at 1-1 going into halftime.
The third quarter was tightly contested with little action in the attacking circles. In the final quarter, Argentina increased the pressure, and Domene scored again in the 49th minute to put his team ahead.

India pushed hard for an equaliser and earned a penalty stroke in the final minutes, but Jugraj Singh’s shot was saved by Santiago, sealing Argentina’s win.

India’s regular captain Harmanpreet Singh missed the match due to a finger injury, with vice-captain Hardik Singh leading the team. India now sits fifth in the standings with 15 points from 12 matches. Their next game is against Australia on June 14.

Before the match, both teams observed a minute’s silence to honour the victims of a tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad earlier in the day.
