Himanta Biswa Sarma to take oath as Assam CM tomorrow

In Assam, the stage is set for the swearing-in of Himanta Biswa Sarma as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term tomorrow. Preparations at the Veterinary College Ground in Khanapara, Guwahati, for the historic political event are almost complete. Caretaker Chief Minister and Chief Minister-designate Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the venue and took stock of the preparations underway. Later, speaking to the media, Dr. Sarma stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP President Nitin Nabin will attend the swearing-in ceremony tomorrow. He added that several Union Ministers and Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states will also attend the event.

The swearing-in will mark the beginning of the NDA’s third consecutive term in Assam and Dr. Sarma’s second consecutive term as Chief Minister, making him the first non-Congress leader in the state’s history to serve back-to-back terms in the post. The NDA secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, with the BJP winning 82 seats, while its allies, the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front, won 10 seats each.
