The Himachal Pradesh government has presented a budget of 54,928 crore Rs. for the financial year 2026-27, triggering a political debate in the state. While the government described the budget as a major step towards development, self-reliance, and social balance, the opposition termed it dull, deficit-driven, and likely to worsen the financial crisis. The budget estimates an economic growth rate of 8.3 per cent for 2025-26, a per capita income of 2,83,626 Rs. and a GSDP of 2.54 lakh crore Rs.
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu stated that the budget focuses on making the state self-reliant, strong, and prosperous, with emphasis on improvements in health, education, energy, transport, and tourism sectors, along with the adoption of modern technologies. He also highlighted efforts to strengthen the rural economy through natural farming, animal husbandry, fisheries, and self-employment schemes. Leader of the Opposition Jai Ram Thakur said the budget carries a deficit of 9,668 crore Rs. and is completely uninspiring.
