At least 21 people have died in the last four days due to rain and flood-related incidents across Maharashtra. The torrential rain continues in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Konkan and other parts of Maharashtra for the fourth consecutive day. Eight people have died in the Nanded district, which is severely affected by the flood. According to IMD, Mumbai has received a record rainfall of around 300 mm, disrupting normal life in the city.
The weather agency issued a red alert to the Vidharbha Region today. Given safety concerns, all the trains between Pune and Mumbai were suspended till further notice. Thane and Raigad districts declared a holiday for schools and colleges today. All primary schools in Patan, Jawli, Mahabaleshwar, Wai, Satara and Karad talukas will also remain closed today and tomorrow as the IMD issues an orange alert in the region. Around 350 people have been rescued and moved to safe locations after the Mithi river breached the danger mark.
The Modak Sagar Dam is currently 98 per cent full, and authorities have warned that heavy rainfall could lead to overflow today. Officials have advised that residents and villages along and near the Vaitarna River downstream remain alert and cautious. The six curved gates of the Koyna Dam have also been opened, releasing 93,200 cusecs of water into the Koyna riverbed. All concerned agencies have been instructed to take necessary preventive measures to ensure public safety in case of sudden water release from the dam.
