In Sikkim, heavy rainfall and unstable weather have triggered fresh warnings and travel disruptions across Northern and other parts of the state. In North Sikkim, continuous rain has severely damaged road infrastructure. The Lachen road has been blocked near Tarum Chu after its base was washed away, cutting off connectivity.
The Border Roads Organisation has said restoration work is in progress but it is likely to take a few days to fully restore the route. The District Administration of Mangan has advised stranded tourists in Lachen to stay put and avoid travel due to safety concerns and adverse weather.
Evacuation of stranded tourists is planned from tomorrow morning, subject to improvement in weather and clearance of snow along the Dongkya La route.
Rescue and coordination efforts are being carried out by the Police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, BRO, and the Indian Army. Meanwhile, the Defence Geoinformatics Research Establishment in Chandigarh has issued an avalanche alert for the region, warning of potential risks until tomorrow.
