Guwahati: Situation returning to normal as authorities restore connectivity after heavy rains

In Assam, people are facing problems as many areas are still inundated due to yesterday’s torrential rains in Guwahati city. However, the situation has slightly improved now. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s daily rainfall data, Guwahati city and many of its adjoining areas received more than 100 mm of rainfall in two to three hours yesterday.

Due to the rains, all government and non-government educational institutions in Guwahati are closed today as per the order issued by the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration. Gauhati University has also been closed today in view of the critical situation created by the rains. The district administration has launched helpline number 93654-29314 and toll-free number 1077 to help people stranded in any waterlogged areas or landslides due to the incessant rains.

That several other districts in Assam have also been severely affected due to recent heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. The adverse weather conditions have caused widespread damage, significantly impacting normal life across the affected regions.

Districts such as Nalbari, Baksa, and Barpeta have reported extensive destruction. Numerous houses have been damaged or completely destroyed due to the intensity of the storm and falling trees. The agricultural sector has also suffered major losses, with standing crops being badly affected, thereby creating serious concerns for the livelihood of farmers in these areas.

In addition, many roads were blocked due to trees being uprooted and scattered across key routes, disrupting transportation and connectivity. Essential services were temporarily affected, and the movement of people and goods was severely hindered during the peak of the storm.

However, it is worth mentioning that the situation is gradually returning to normal. Local authorities and emergency services have been actively engaged in clearing roads, restoring connectivity, and providing necessary assistance to the affected population. Efforts are ongoing to assess the full extent of the damage and to initiate appropriate relief and rehabilitation measures.
