Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia described Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS) as the backbone of rural India, praising their dedication in ensuring last-mile connectivity across the country’s 6.3 lakh villages.
Addressing the Gramin Dak Sevak Sammelan in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, the Union Minister for Communications said GDS personnel serve the nation in scorching heat, heavy rains, cyclones and even the snow-bound regions of Kashmir. He termed them “one of the most shining jewels of Mother India,” comparing their role to the flow of blood in the human body that sustains life.
Mr. Scindia said nearly three lakh GDS workers are currently serving across the country and have become a vital link between the government and citizens. Noting the deep trust rural communities place in them, he said people regard Gramin Dak Sevaks and village revenue assistants as next only to their families, given their close connection with every household.
Highlighting their contribution to financial inclusion, the Union Minister said, their efforts have enabled India Post to open 38 crore postal accounts, mobilising a corpus of 22 lakh crore rupees. He added that small savings schemes such as the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana have further strengthened outreach in rural areas.
Recalling reforms initiated nearly two decades ago, Mr. Scindia said GDS personnel earlier lacked basic allowances for umbrellas, footwear, bicycles and health insurance. He noted that in 2009, steps were taken to facilitate admission for their children in Kendriya Vidyalayas.
Urging employees to adopt the Prime Minister’s mantra of “Reform, Perform and Transform,” Mr. Scindia said technology would be the key driver of transformation. He outlined the ABCD principle of Accuracy, Behaviour, Commitment and Delivery as essential for success.
Gramin Dak Sevaks working in the Andhra Pradesh Postal Circle were facilitated on the occasion.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Union Minister of State for Communications Dr. P. Chandrasekhar, Public Representatives and officials were present.
