On the occasion of International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 today, Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Kirti Vardhan Singh has said that the government has reaffirmed that meaningful conservation begins at the grassroots.
Sharing a video message in a social media post, the Minister said that protecting biodiversity is not only a global commitment but also a local responsibility shared by communities, institutions, and governments. Mr Singh stated that the theme of the day this year – Acting Locally for Global Impact highlights a shift from broad global goals to practical action at the local level. He added that on this day India honours its local conservation leaders who are often unsung heroes.
He highlighted that platforms like Mann Ki Baat have brought the work of these local conservation leaders into national attention and have strengthened the idea that local efforts contribute to national pride and global progress. Mr Singh emphasised that amid the rise in urbanisation, India is promoting nature-positive cities through the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. The Minister also said that Initiatives such as Mission Sahbhagita are helping to build inclusive, transparent, and people-driven biodiversity governance systems across the country. Mr Singh further noted that India remains committed to translating global biodiversity goals into meaningful local action through Mission Life and sustainable development initiatives.
