Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary today said that the government is strengthening India’s customs administration to make it more technology-driven, transparent and trade-friendly, while safeguarding national security and economic interests. Addressing a programme to mark International Customs Day in New Delhi, the Minister said the day serves as a reminder of the vital role played by customs administrations worldwide in ensuring the secure, orderly and efficient movement of goods across borders.
Referring to this year’s theme, Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment, he said the subject is highly relevant in the current global context marked by emerging threats such as narcotics smuggling, illegal wildlife trade and economic offences. Mr Chaudhary highlighted key reforms announced in the Union Budget 2026-27, including a comprehensive package aimed at accelerating trade processes, enhancing passenger convenience and improving overall user experience.
He said new reforms have simplified and clarified norms for international travellers, and measures have been introduced to streamline e-commerce and courier clearances to support small and medium enterprises in accessing global markets. The Minister further noted that digital initiatives such as strengthened single-window systems, improved cargo registration and clearance processes, advanced scanning systems and AI-based image analysis are enhancing risk management while ensuring minimal disruption to legitimate trade. He said these reforms reflect a balanced and forward-looking approach that strengthens border security while making India a competitive and trusted global trade hub.
On the occasion, the Minister also inaugurated SWIFT 2.0, an integrated digital single-window platform enabling traders to file a unified declaration for multiple Participating Government Agencies, and ATITHI 2.0, an automated traveller facilitation system allowing digital filing of baggage and currency declarations along with online duty payments. He also facilitated the distribution of WCO Merit Certificates and certificate booklets to officers for excellence in customs duties.
