Ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, the government today held an all-party meeting to ensure a smooth functioning of both the Houses of Parliament. The meeting was convened by the government to seek cooperation from opposition parties for the smooth conduct of the session. Floor leaders of different political parties representing the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha attended the meeting. Union Minister and Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha Jagat Praksah Nadda chaired the meeting in which Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Ministers of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal and Dr L Murugan were present. Besides, Gaurav Gogoi and Pramod Tiwari from Congress, Supriya Sule from NCP-SCP, Tiruchi Siva of DMK, Ram Gopal Yadav of Samajwadi Party, T R Baalu from DMK and Sanjay Singh from AAP attended the meeting.
The Monsoon Session begins from tomorrow and will continue till 21st of August. During the session, there will be a total of 21 sittings of both Houses.
Talking to the media after the meeting, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said that the meeting was very constructive and the floor leaders put forth the position of their parties and the issues that they want to raise during this session. Mr Rijiu said that the government has requested the opposition to ensure the proper functioning of both Houses. He said, both the ruling side and the Opposition should work together with good coordination.
Mr Rijiju said, Government is very much open to discussing important issues like Operation Sindoor in Parliament. When asked about the Opposition’s intent to bring up US President Donald Trump’s remarks on mediation between India and Pakistan post Operation Sindoor, the Minister said, government will respond appropriately on the matter on the floor of the House. Replying to a media query on the Justice Varma impeachment matter, he said, the process will be undertaken together by all parties as it is not the move by the Government alone. The motion for the removal of Justice Varma has already gathered significant backing from lawmakers. Mr Rijiju said, number of signatures of MPs for the motion to remove Justice Varma has already crossed 100.
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi demanded Prime Minister Modi’s statement on the floor of the House on Trump’s claims, Pahalgam terror attack and Special Intensive Revision in Bihar.
N K Premachandran of RSP said, the demand of the entire opposition today was to have a full-fledged discussion on the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor and Donald Trump’s statement regarding the ceasefire.
BJD leader Sasmit Patra said, his party will raise the law and the situation and atrocities against women in Odisha during the session.
During the session, important legislations including Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill 2025, the National Sports Governance Bill 2025 and the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024 are expected to be taken up for discussion and passage.
