The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated in Sri Lanka with the Indian community celebrating the festival with great devotion. The Indian Cultural Association and Marathi Mandali in collaboration with Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre organised the pranpratishtha of the Ganesh idol in Colombo after which cultural programmes were performed.
The event featured the traditional Dhol Tasha Lezim in addition to several other performances. The festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, who is a symbol of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Utsav, the celebration is part of the ten-day-long festivities during which people place clay idols of Lord Ganesha at their homes and worship them. Ganesh Chaturthi was also celebrated at Kotagala in the upcountry region of the island by Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
Ganesha idols from 15 places were brought to one location where maha aarti was performed after which the idols were immersed in the Kotagala Pond.
