FM Sitharaman Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Mental Healthcare and Neurological Sciences

Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman reaffirmed the Government of India’s commitment to advancing mental healthcare and neurological sciences, highlighting NIMHANS’ key role as a national centre of excellence. She announced Central Government approval for two major projects at NIMHANS 300-bed Trauma Care Hospital at the North Bengaluru campus, sanctioned at 498 crore rupees on 40 acres, and a four-storeyed OPD Complex at the central campus, approved at 440 crore rupees, housing 590 clinics and expanding outpatient capacity to over 5,000 patients daily.
 
 
The Minister also praised the Tele Manas initiative, coordinated by NIMHANS, whose helpline has received over 30 lakh calls, reflecting its wide reach. Emphasising the pillars of patient care, training, and research, she said NIMHANS must continue evolving as a national model for accessible, proactive, and dignified mental healthcare, vital for realizing Viksit Bharat 2047. She delivered these remarks virtually during the 28th Convocation ceremony at NIMHANS, Bengaluru, today. Dr. Sharanprakash T Patil, Karnataka Minister for Medical Education and Skill Development, announced the state government’s sanction for two NIMHANS-like centres in Mysore and Kalaburagi, with an initial 100 crore rupees investment. Dr. Pratima Murthy, NIMHANS Director, gave the welcome address. At the convocation, 251 students received degrees and certificates, and 28 meritorious students were honoured with excellence awards.
