In Jammu and Kashmir, at least 10 people have been killed as relentless rainfall over the past 24 hours has triggered a flood emergency across the Jammu division. The pilgrimage to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine has been suspended. Six people have died and 18 others have been injured due to landslides on the route to the shrine atop the Trikuta Hills, caused by heavy rainfall.
The Himkoti route has also been closed. Four people have also lost their lives in the Doda district. Electricity supply and Internet services in some areas of the Jammu region have reportedly been disrupted. All government offices, except emergency services, will be closed today. Meanwhile, leave for government officials involved in rescue operations and flood protection has been cancelled in the affected districts. Water levels in major rivers like the Tawi, Chenab, Neru, and Kalnai have surged.
The Meteorological Department has predicted continued rainfall, heightening concerns of further inundation. An alert has been sounded in several districts, and leaves of all the officials have been cancelled to maintain round-the-clock presence at the ground level and continue rescue and relief operations in flood-affected areas.
Intermittent rain in parts of Punjab for the last over 48 hours and continuous rainfall over the past two to three days in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir have caused Ranjit Sagar Dam and Pong Dam to reach maximum capacity, necessitating controlled release of water. Water is also being released from Bhakra Dam for the last over a week in a controlled manner to avoid damage to the dam.
Seven districts, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Tarn Tara, are on high alert. A caution has also been sounded in Amritsar. Flood control rooms have been set up across the state.
