Flood-like situation in Bihar as Kosi, Mahananda and other rivers swell after heavy rains

In Bihar, a flood-like situation is prevailing due to continuous rainfall and swelling of major rivers, including Kosi and Mahananda. Heavy downpour recorded in the Terai regions of Nepal and in North Bihar has caused major rivers to swell. Many of these rivers are flowing above the danger mark, creating a flood-like situation in several districts of North Bihar. Other rivers, including the Kamla, Kamla Balan, Budhi Gandak, Bagmati, and the Adhwara group of rivers, are also in spate.

Due to record water discharge in the Kosi River, all 56 gates of the Birpur Barrage in Supaul have been opened.  As of 4 p.m. yesterday, more than 5.33 lakh cusecs of water were released from the barrage – the highest discharge of this year. This large outflow has led to a rise in water levels, triggering floods in Supaul, Madhepura, and Saharsa districts, submerging several low-lying areas and worsening flood conditions.

In Supaul district, floodwaters from the Kosi River have entered over 500 houses across six blocks. The district administration has intensified relief and rescue operations in the affected regions. A large number of residents have been evacuated to safer locations. Relief camps and community kitchens have been set up for the displaced families. In the Seemanchal region, rising water levels in the Kosi and Mahananda rivers have triggered floods in parts of Kishanganj, Araria, and Katihar districts.

Heavy inflow in the rain-fed rivers has led to flooding in several areas of West Champaran and East Champaran districts. Following instructions from the Water Resources Department, engineers are conducting round-the-clock patrolling along embankments. Personnel deployed for embankment protection have been asked to remain on high alert, and residents living inside the embankment areas have been urged to move to higher ground. In Sitamarhi, the water level of all rivers – including the Bagmati – has risen above the danger mark. Floodwaters have inundated portions of the National Highway at Bhitthamore and Sonbarsa, while in Sheohar, an alert has been issued in view of the alarming situation.
