In Ladakh, at least five people have lost their lives in a snow avalanche that struck near Zoji La Pass today. According to initial reports, several others have also been injured in the incident and the rescue is still going on.
Soon after the incident, rescue and relief operations were launched at the site. Authorities are continuing the rescue operation, and further details are awaited.
Teams from the district administration, Police, disaster response forces, Volunteers, and the Border Roads Organisation have reached the area and are carrying out search and rescue operations despite challenging weather conditions.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, has expressed concern over the unfortunate incident. In a post on X, he said he has directed the Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police of Kargil to immediately reach the spot and mobilise relief and rescue operations.
The Lieutenant Governor further informed that all government agencies, including disaster relief forces and the BRO, have been put on high alert. He added that he is personally monitoring the situation.
