The first Khelo India Tribal Games have commenced in Chhattisgarh today. The event was formally inaugurated this evening in Raipur by Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.
Addressing the ceremony, the Union Minister said that the Khelo India Tribal Games will now be held annually in Chhattisgarh. He stated that tribal athletes from across the country will come to the state to showcase their talent. He described the Games as a significant initiative of the Government, aimed at identifying tribal sporting talent and providing them with the best training to prepare for international competitions.
On the occasion, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao, along with several members of the State Cabinet, was present. The competition, which will continue till April 3, features events in seven sports disciplines, including athletics, hockey, football, archery, wrestling, weightlifting and swimming. In addition, mallakhamb and kabaddi have been included as demonstration sports.
The Games are being held in three cities of the state: Raipur, Jagdalpur and Ambikapur. More than three thousand tribal athletes and officials from around thirty States and Union Territories are participating in the event. On the first day of the Games, Karnataka is leading the medal tally with seven medals, including five gold medals. Odisha is in second place with four medals, including one gold. Competitions in swimming and football were held on the opening day today.
