First India-born cheetah gives birth to five cubs at Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. This was disclosed by Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav.
A major wildlife conservation update has come from Madhya Pradesh, where a 33-month-old India-born female cheetah named Mukhi has given birth to five cubs in Kuno National Park, raising the total number of cheetahs in the country to 32. This achievement is being seen as the biggest success so far of the Cheetah Reintroduction Programme launched on the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav congratulated the Kuno forest staff, saying the state is playing an important role in global biodiversity conservation. India’s cheetah revival began on 17 September 2022, when eight cheetahs were brought from Namibia to Kuno and released into the wild by Prime Minister Modi. The continuous breeding success and increasing cheetah numbers show that with scientific planning and strong monitoring, the return of extinct wildlife species is indeed possible.
