Sri Lanka’s former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has been ordered to appear in court on January 28, 2026, in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged misappropriation of state funds. The case concerns expenses incurred during a visit to a UK university, which Mr. Wickremesinghe attended while returning from a United Nations meeting.
He was accompanied by his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, who was being conferred an honorary professorship at the event. Currently out on bail, Mr. Wickremesinghe appeared in court on Wednesday with his wife as proceedings continued.
