Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan today said that with rising government expenditure, the roles and responsibilities of Estimates Committees have also increased. He was speaking at the valedictory function of the National Conference of Estimates Committees of Parliament and legislative bodies of States and Union Territories in Mumbai. The Governor appealed to the Committees to work more proactively to ensure better governance and fiscal discipline.
Addressing the gathering, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said that Parliamentary Committees do not function against the government but play a supplementary role. He urged governments to maintain a similar approach while evaluating the reports of these Committees and called on the administration to implement their recommendations in the same spirit.
The Speaker said that if these Committees are empowered and function effectively, they can bring about significant changes. While he acknowledged the progress made so far, he emphasised that there is still scope for much larger transformation.
Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, Harivansh, said the conference discussed various methods for ensuring careful and efficient use of public funds.
Chairperson of the Estimates Committee of Parliament, Dr. Sanjay Jaiswal, highlighted the key resolution passed during the conference, aimed at strengthening the role of financial oversight.
A total of 22 Members of Parliament and 109 members of state legislatures attended the conference.
