Eminent Astrophysicist Dr Jayant Narlikar passes away at 86

 
Renowned astrophysicist, Dr Jayant Narlikar, passed away this morning at the age of 86 in Pune. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to the departed soul, remarking that with his demise, Indian astronomy has lost one of its most prominent pioneers. He stated that Dr Narlikar illuminated India’s science-driven identity and demonstrated the significance of astronomy.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that Dr Narlikar worked tirelessly throughout his life to instil scientific principles, rational thinking, and a scientific outlook in the younger generation. Mr Pawar emphasised that he had a unique ability to explain the mysteries of science to children in a simple and accessible manner. He added that with his passing, a radiant star dedicated to the spread of knowledge and science has faded from the nation’s scientific sky. 
 
 
Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde remarked that Dr Narlikar’s work was of great significance to India, and the remarkable progress he made in astronomy, as a proud son of Maharashtra, is a matter of immense pride for the state.
 
 
NCP leader Sharad Pawar also paid tribute to Dr Jayant Narlikar. In a social media post, he stated that among the contributions of Marathi scientists at the national and international levels, Dr Narlikar’s name is always spoken with deep respect and honour. Mr Pawar noted that the Hoyle-Narlikar theory, developed in collaboration with renowned British scientist Sir Fred Hoyle, holds great significance in the scientific community. Highlighting Dr Narlikar’s pivotal role in institutions such as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), he emphasised the vital direction Dr Narlikar provided to scientific research in the country.
