Electricity is not just power, it is roadmap for future: Manohar Lal

Union Power Minister Manohar Lal today said electricity is not just power, it is the roadmap for the future. Addressing the inaugural session of the Bharat Electricity Summit 2026 in New Delhi, the Minister emphasized on the importance of power affordability and said that power in India is more affordable than many other countries. He added that the government is planning to implement under-sea power transmission cable network with the UAE as a part of One Sun, One World, One Grid Network.

Mr Lal highlighted that in the last 10 years, the government has added 2.09 lakh circuit kilometre lines for power transmission. Addressing the gathering, New and Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi said that electronic production has increased from 1.1 lakh crore rupees to 11.8 lakh crore rupees, highlighting a more than six times growth. He added that there are currently 300 domestic manufacturers in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his letter for the Summit wrote that with the achievement of over 50 percent non-fossil fuel capacity, India is on a pathway to 500 GW by 2030. He added that the Summit brings the whole power and energy ecosystem onto a single platform to exchange ideas, foster collaboration and chart a shared path to power growth and improve lives. He said, it reflects country’s resolve of ‘Electrifying Growth, Empowering Sustainability, Connecting Globally’, and advances India’s vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
