Election Commission of India suspends Avijit Pal, Inspector-in-Charge of Basanti Police Station in South 24 Parganas district

The Election Commission of India has suspended Avijit Pal, Inspector-in-Charge of Basanti Police Station in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, for alleged negligence in handling the Basanti Bazar violence yesterday. Several people, including police personnel, were injured in the incident.
 
A departmental inquiry has been ordered. Prabir Ghosh from the Enforcement Branch has been appointed as the new Inspector-in-charge.
 
In a separate case in Ranaghat Nadia, the Commission ordered strict action after a polling official was assaulted for objecting to the screening of promotional videos featuring West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a training session. Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said an FIR has been registered against two persons.
 
Nadia District Election Officer Srikant Palli said the accused have been suspended and a show-cause notice issued to the concerned Block Development Officer.
